Backend Engineer (Product)
Full-time
Remote
We seek team members who are creative, proactive, and curious. We welcome diversity of thought and cultivate a culture founded on low power distance and radical candor, where advancement comes from respect and merit, not politics. We're fully remote. You'll set your own hours, with a high value placed on uninterrupted, deep work, and we ruthlessly nix any meeting a message could resolve. If your skills and inclinations align, please apply.
About the role
We're looking for a backend engineer to build the services and APIs behind our products, primarily in Python. You'll build product features on the backend, from data and business logic to the APIs that power the product.
You'll own real product work, from a loosely defined idea through design, implementation, and release. You'll build application logic, APIs, and integrations, and work closely with product, design, and frontend engineers to turn requirements into things people actually use.
Our products are built with AI at their core and ship fast, so you'll build AI-powered features, integrate LLMs and AI services, and work in a codebase that moves quickly. AI-assisted development is part of how we work, and we expect you to embrace it.
What you’ll do
Before diving into the technical responsibilities, here are the traits we value most:
Candor: You communicate directly and honestly in service of better outcomes.
Conscientiousness: You take ownership, respect teammates, and build things others can rely on.
First-principles thinking: You question assumptions and make decisions grounded in evidence.
In this role, you will:
Build product features end to end on the backend, from design through deployment
Design, build, and maintain backend services and the APIs that other systems build against, in Python
Design data models and work with SQL and NoSQL databases
Build AI-powered features and integrate LLMs and AI services
Integrate third-party services, APIs, and internal systems
Own the reliability, performance, and maintainability of the services you build
Contribute to testing, CI/CD, and deployment
Take part in technical decisions for the product backend
Who you are
You are an experienced backend engineer who likes building product features and shipping them to real users. You care about clean services, solid data models, and APIs that are easy to build against.
You can take a feature from a loosely defined idea through design, implementation, and release, largely independently. You care about the product outcome as much as the code, and you make pragmatic trade-offs to ship.
You think in systems, you're comfortable with ambiguity, and you like working closely with product, design, and frontend engineers.
You value feedback, continuous learning, and clear communication, and you're comfortable challenging existing approaches when you can back your ideas with reasoning and evidence.
Required qualifications
3+ years of production Python, with async, typing, testing, and building maintainable services
Experience with a modern Python web framework (e.g. FastAPI, Django, or Flask)
Working proficiency with JavaScript/TypeScript (Node.js) as a secondary backend language
Production experience building and operating backend services and REST and/or GraphQL APIs
Strong data modeling skills, and experience with SQL and NoSQL databases (schema design, efficient queries, indexing, and performance)
Experience integrating third-party services and APIs (auth, payments, data providers, and the like)
Experience owning features end to end in production, from design through deployment and operation
Proficiency with Git and collaborative development workflows
Nice-to-have skills
Experience building AI-powered features or integrating LLMs and agents
Experience with real-time or event-driven systems (WebSockets, message queues)
Experience with serverless architectures
Familiarity with authentication systems (e.g. Keycloak)
Frontend experience (React) for occasional full-stack work
What we offer
A high-trust, remote-first culture
End-to-end ownership of product features real users depend on
Close collaboration with product, design, and frontend engineers
A team that values clear thinking, rigor, and direct communication
Room to influence the product and technical direction
Competitive compensation based on experience and impact
